I’ll pass you over to Tom….
If Christmas in New York is too obvious and winter sun in the Maldives is too cliché for your taste, here are 5 fantastic destinations that could transform your December honeymoon into something both surprising and magical. If you’re in need of some inspiration, take a look at these 5 alternative places for the perfect Christmas honeymoon…
Morocco
December in Marrakech reaches highs of around 20°C and you’ll get around 7 hours of sunshine each day – so it’s great if you don’t fare well in bad weather. Although there are large expat and Christian communities, most Moroccans do not celebrate Christmas so December in Morocco is perfect if you’re after something totally different from the norm. But the main draw of this destination is the mild and comfortable climate, making it the ideal time to go camping in the dessert and trekking up the Atlas Mountains for the more adventurous honeymooners. Book yourself into a luxury hotel, kick off your shoes and get yourself ready for some fantastic Berber hospitality.
Iceland
Exploring Reykjavik and the South Coast could be the perfect honeymoon if you don’t mind wrapping up warm and braving harsh weather conditions. The city of Reykjavik makes Christmas look so beautiful and every building is decorated tastefully with a vintage touch. From the city, you can book excursions to explore the stunning southern Coastline, the icebergs of Jokulsarlon or Fjallsárlón and the famous Blue Lagoon spa. The Northern lights can also be seen from the city if you’re lucky enough to catch a glimpse but for better chances of seeing the Aurora Borealis, you can book a 4×4 tour or boat excursion with an operator.
Vienna, Austria
Vienna may not be the first place that springs to mind when you think of city destinations in December. But you won’t find anywhere more romantic than this Austrian capital when it comes to Christmas. Swap the commercial lights of New York for this elegantly decorated centre and enjoy an old-fashioned Christmas where outdoor markets are aplenty and fine dining comes as standard. The Vienna Boys’ Choir concerts are hugely popular this time of year and Rathaus City Hall is a must if you love festive lights. And be sure to head to the Eistraum so you can join the locals on the city’s much loved outdoor ice rink.
New Zealand
Despite highs of 30°C, white sandy beaches and amazing sunshine all day long, Christmas in New Zealand is surprisingly festive. It’s a commercial holiday that the whole country likes to get involved in and barbeque dinners are a very popular way of celebrating with friends and family. But if you’re craving the familiar sight of soft, powdery snow, head to Ohakune National Park or Methven near Mount Hutt for some high altitude skiing! New Zealand caters for any kind of Christmas honeymoon you want, whether it’s a luxury escape with all the pampering you could wish for, or an adventure honeymoon exploring in a campervan.
Livingstone, Zambia
Livingstone has a large Christian population, so Christmas here is a big thing. You’ll find the local people to be amazingly warm and welcoming and they will always encourage tourists to attend their Christmas carol or nativity events. So you won’t be at a loss for Christmas spirit if you decide to holiday in Zambia; but what really makes this place perfect for a honeymoon is its proximity to Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which acts as a secret gateway to the Victoria Falls. The relatively low tourist count in Zambia means that you won’t be overwhelmed by tourist crowds; a truly romantic place to witness one of nature’s wonders.
Australia
A winter honeymoon to Australia certainly won’t feel like winter, with an average temperature of 22-degrees. Australia is a diverse country, possessing golden, sandy beaches, bustling urban areas and quieter, outback towns. The ideal honeymoon would be to experience all that Australia has to offer, so why not hire a camper and experience this great country on an adventure honeymoon? One of Australia’s favorite Christmas pastimes is ‘Carols by Candlelight’, were people take to the streets and rejoice in festive songs while holding candles to light their way, something you and your one true love can enjoy together!
Thanks so much Tom, great advice as ever I’m sure you will agree.
