Chloe and Toby’s Homespun Scottish Barn Wedding by Light of Wild
Today I have such a super cute wedding for you from the highlands fo Scotland. This Scottish barn wedding is a real DIY project, where Chloe and Toby were helped out by all their friends and family. Everyone involved really pulled together to make their wedding a success. From the loan of the barn to the cake, to the dressing of the venue, it was a fabulous homespun affair! I just love the yellow theme, as it works so well with the rustic barn venue, along with all the DIY details and personal touches. Big thanks to Light of Wild for the fab images.
A traditional boho style Highland wedding in a cow shed covered in fairy lights. Unique, personal and boozy!
Chloe and Toby were married on 29th July, 2017 at Corrichullie Farm, Grantown on Spey, Highland, Scotland. ‘Both the ceremony and reception were held in a working barn. We wanted to get married somewhere we could put our own stamp on whilst being surrounded by the beautiful mountains of the highlands. The farm is local to where I grew up and it’s a great showcase of the Scottish highlands to show Toby’s English family where we met and fell in love. We had 80 guests throughout the day and 120 in the evening and it took 12-months to plan.’
How they met
We met through a mutual friend whilst Toby was working in an outdoor centre in my home town. I met him on a break from uni in the pub. 5 and a half years together.
The Proposal
Toby proposed on Christmas Day on a walk by the river with my family dogs Glen and Ricky. When we first started seeing each other we would wander down there and talk for hours. The ring is still the most beautiful I have ever seen… vintage dark blue sapphire and diamonds. Really interesting and unique.
How did you allocate your budget?
We were so lucky to get our venue for free! We donated to charity in the barn owners names. So we had a bit to play around with. The majority of money was spent on the catering, the band and the booze… the essentials!
Where did you splurge and how did you save?
We saved a lot of money by utilising the talents of our friends and family. So many people wanted to help out and offered their services as favours. Our cake was gifted to us, the venue owned by family friends, staff were all volunteers and we made use of Toby’s talents in dressing venues for events and mine as an artist.
Why did you choose your photographer?
We wanted someone to capture the day as naturally as possible, with an ethereal feel. Light of Wild were suggested to us by a local photographer that had been on courses with her. She travelled so far to shoot her first Scottish wedding and I’m so glad she did because the photos are amazing and it was so fun. I would highly recommend Light of Wild!
The Dress
The dress was custom made and the shoes were from Ruby Shoo. I wore vintage 1930’s diamond drop earrings and a fresh flower crown by Wild Gorse.
The Suit and Bridesmaids
Toby wore a Capercaillie tartan kilt and the bridesmaids had dresses from ASOS.
Theme or colour scheme
We originally wanted a simple colour scheme of whites and greens. However, my love for yellow made it’s way in when I randomly ordered yellow bridesmaid dresses from ASOS. The girls fell in love, as did I. So yellow played a vital role.
Flowers
Our florist was Wild Gorse and the bridal bouquet was beautiful and wild with a flower crown of thistles, gypsophila, yellow roses and daisies.
Decoration
Hessian drapes and lots of fairy lights and festoon lighting. We had fairy light back drops. Loads of random bottles filled with fresh and paper flowers. We were married under a fresh flower arch. There were so many personal touches around the barn, such as: photos, artwork, straw bales in the cozy corner and homemade cocktails. It was all very personal.
Food
Anti pasti boards, BBQ sharing platters of chicken, beef, halloumi and veg with salads and breads followed by chocolate brownie, pavlovas and strawberry tarts and a fun fish and chip van in the evening. Catering was by Taste of Moray.
Wedding Cake
A vanilla and lemon mascarpone and chocolate naked cake decorated with fresh berries and flowers by Clares Cakes.
Entertainment
A piper throughout the day and a Ceilidh band called Tweed Ceilidh Band and a cheesy DJ for the late night dancing. We also have a mini Highland games competition which included tossing the caber, welling tossing and a tug of war with a disposable camera photo hunt.
Who supplied the stationery?
Invites were made by Wonderful Wonky Weddings.
Personal Touches
We did everything ourselves to cleaning out the barn, hanging hessian drapes, festoon lights, making the cocktails, stocking the bar, setting the tables and building the stage. Family and friends were amazing!!!
Our table centre pieces were hundreds of paper flowers made by Toby’s sister. These were displayed in various bottles lit up with lights. We had family and personal photos all around the barn. I also had a piece of my own artwork on display that I painted for the wedding: a bride and groom highland cows.
Special Moments
Getting ready with the girls and seeing my dad’s reaction in the morning. Our ceremony was amazing. Seeing each other for the first time on the day was so special. The humanist ceremony was so personal. Everyone was crying and laughing in equal measures. The band were also amazing and it was so fun having everyone doing the strip the willow (traditional Scottish dance.)
Advice for other couples
Be brave to make it 100% your own. It is a lot of work, but so much fun for you, your family and friends. It’s so worth it to have a truly unique day. Don’t be scared to delegate tasks to friends and family for the day itself. Everyone is so happy to be a part and involved in making the day great.
Biggest Surprise
We were so relaxed and calm on the day itself. We expected to be nervous. We turned to each other throughout the day and kept saying that it didn’t feel like our wedding because we were so chilled.
